Synetic Theater opens "The Crackpots"

Celebrate the light and the art of the winter season with Synetic Theater at its world premiere of Rezo Gabriadze's "The Crackpots", a comic fable of misfits inspired by love, freedom and the dream to fly.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) December 29, 2003 --In January award-winning Synetic Theater opens The Crackpots, a comic fable of misfits inspired by love, freedom, and the fascination of flight.

The Crackpots, which runs January 16-February 8 at the Rosslyn Spectrum in Arlington, VA, is the worlds first stage adaptation of the Soviet-era film, Sherekelebi, written and directed by the renowned Rezo Gabriadze, a native of the Republic of Georgia. Mr. Gabriadze used humor and double entendres to smuggle his movie with its strong message of personal liberation past Soviet censors in 1973.

Like the film that inspired it, the play is a hilarious celebration of the human spirit and what people will do to realize their dreams. The Crackpots is pure allegory," artistic director Paata Tsikurishvili. The Crackpots is a story about a banished youth who embarks on a bizarre rite of passage that leads, via an affair with the mistress of the local police chief, to prison. Here he meets the storys other protagonist who has been sentenced for 48 years for the same crime of indiscretion. In all those solitary years the aged prisoner has dreamt up a machine that can fly. What happens next is funny, fantastical and inspiring.

Tsikurishvili is dedicating The Crackpots to the people of the Republic of Georgia. In November 2003, the opposition forced the resignation of the countrys president in a "velvet uprising described as revolution of flowers." The Crackpots isnt a political play but its theme of yearning for personal freedom shines through in some absurdly funny antics," Tsikurishvili said, ‘think of the fables of Mark Twain, the pathos of Charlie Chaplin."

Synetic Theater was founded in April 2002 by Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili—acclaimed theater professionals from the Republic of Georgia. The company specializes in movement-based, non-realistic theater, synthesizing classical theatrical arts with the best of diverse cultural traditions.

In 2003 Synetic Theater won three major Helen Hayes Awards for its interpretation of Hamlet, enacted without dialogue through drama, movement, dance, music and mime. Hamlet…the rest is silence received the award for Best Resident Play, Best Direction, and Best Choreography.
