First Technology Offers Safety and Security for Hybrid Vehicles

With heightened interest in hybrid vehicles demonstrated on the part of global manufacturers, First Technology is pleased to announce a safety component for these higher-powered electrical systems. This product takes the form of a battery disconnect device that is the product of an extensive testing and development effort on the part of First Technology in cooperation with OEMs and Tier 1 Suppliers. With electrical power providing a significant amount of driving force, it is easy to recognize that hybrid vehicles will incorporate higher electrical currents than gasoline-only vehicles. It is exactly for this reason that First Technology is focusing on safety and providing an easy-to-access and easy-to-use on/off switch that will help protect in the case of collision or routine service.

The core of the battery disconnect device is an extremely fast acting bi-stable switch that draws no power for continuous operation, and requires little power to switch on or off. The device accepts a signal from a collision detection module that controls the air bags and turns off vehicle power after collision, reducing chances of fire or electrical shock. No action is required by the driver. The First Technology battery disconnect device can be set to disconnect the entire vehicles power supply or to selectively maintain power to safety and convenience items like hazard flashers, Telematics by OnStar®, power windows and power door locks.

In addition to safety and security, this device also provides service benefits and an opportunity to optimize electrical architecture for current vehicles, as its power circuits are trunk mounted and fully backward compatible into todays 14-volt vehicles.

This low cost, fast acting and highly customizable switch is available through First Technology, a leading worldwide OEM supplier of fuel cutoff switches and similar safety devices for over 30 years. The First Technology battery disconnect device will soon be seen in an upcoming full-size hybrid pick-up truck, and is being promoted for numerous other vehicles.
