Buried under both snow AND work? Not if You Can Work From Anywhere!
Don't miss work because you cant make it into the office due to bad weather. Today's technology allows smart companies to set their employees up to work from anywhere. Resources like YouCanWorkFromAnywhere.com help them learn to master more mobile work!
NORTH ANDOVER, MA - February 20, 2003 - The stories are pretty much the same all over the past few days in the North East. "I couldn't get into work for two days", "They haven't plowed my road yet", "Our office is still closed."
The North East is reeling from one of the of most major snow storms of the past decade. Many people couldn't make it into the office at all, and for those that could they wasted hours on icy roads sitting in traffic or on crowded public transportation, cursing the weather.
People and businesses everywhere lost time and money due to this unproductive period. After they dug themselves out of all the snow, people finally returned to their offices only to find they have to dig themselves out of piles of work!
"It doesn't have to be this way", says Phil Montero founder of YouCanWorkFromAnywhere.com, a resource for teleworkers, roadwarriors and other mobile or work at home professionals. "With the technology available today the smart companies are prepared for these type of situations. They have systems setup that allow their employees to work from not only home, but from anywhere. They can access email, files, even remotely control computers in their office."
The companies that have such systems in place didn't lose time or money. It was business as usual, just from a more "virtual office".
As a consultant and coach that helps people find more flexible ways to work Montero stresses that having the technology is only the first part, it's also important to make sure people know how to use these tools.
"Training is essential in today's work world to teach people how to be more flexible, mobile workers. It's not enough to equip someone with a laptop or a palm pilot and then expect them to be productive when out of the office."
With the snow finally ending and people returning to work many companies will spend the next week recovering from the lost time. The more forward thinking companies will take this time to reevaluate the way they currently work.
"It's been said that work is something you do, not someplace you go," muses Montero, "I'm sure a lot of people will be thinking long and hard about that over the next week as they dig themselves out from under all their work."
