Louisville, KYÂBillboards with this message of support for president Bush and American troops are springing up from coast to coast. The bipartisan grassroots campaign, which started in Louisville, Kentucky, has sparked similar efforts in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, California and New Mexico. Organizers say residents in several other cities are in the process of organizing to follow suit.
One of the latest efforts is headed by a group of Roswell, New Mexico, mothers who are mobilizing for the troops. Leading the effort is Carrie Hollifield, a mother of two and a daughter of a Vietnam Veteran. Hollifield still remembers the pain her father felt upon returning from Vietnam and wants troops to know they have the support of a majority of Americans. ÂI donÂt want service men and women to come back to the humiliation, pain and disrespect our Vietnam Vets experienced, says Hollifield.
Hollifield got involved after listening to a caller on a talk radio show. That caller was Ted Jackson, a partner in The Commonwealth Group, a governmental affairs firm, and owner of English Emprise, a marketing company. Jackson says he initiated this effort in response to billboards in Louisville and across the country bought by Peaceroots.org promoting Âpeace is patriotic.Â
ÂThis is our response in our community to a vocal minority view opposed to President Bush. This is also a call for people to take a similar stand across the country, Jackson says. ThatÂs exactly what is happening. Jackson, established a website, http://www.supportpresidentbush.net, which provides free artwork for anyone to use for similar billboards across America.
The moms in Roswell have raised enough money for two billboards to be erected this week. A similar billboard will also be unveiled this week in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Two billboards are also in the works in the Rockport, Texas, area. Five billboards are set to go up this month in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
