Company Headed for Success in Extremely Competitive and Saturated Industry
New Boston Books, Inc. (NBB) has been accepted as a vendor with the nations second largest wholesaler, Baker & Taylor (B&T). NBB received the news unexpectedly on March 10. The publishing company was pleasantly surprised by B&Ts decision. In December, B&T informed NBB that it had a new policy and would only accept new publisher clients that have established a minimum annual revenue model." This meant that new publishers, including NBB, would not be eligible.

B&T did not specify the reason for its recent exception for NBB. But the president of NBB believes that B&T must already be receiving a sizable number of requests from bookstores and libraries for NBBs first title. This is despite the major publicity campaign for The Fundamentals of Extremism: the Christian Right in America edited by Kimberly Blaker has been delayed until mid-August 2003.
This is very big news for NBB. Many booksellers and librarians will only order books that are carried by B&T or Ingrams. Approximately 75% of all library orders go through Baker & Taylor and a substantial percentage of bookstore orders.
Because NBB was recently accepted for distribution by Independent Publishers Group, The Fundamentals of Extremism would become available from B&T in June or July anyway, since IPG distributes to B&T. But the title will now be available through B&T by mid-March, which could result in substantial early sales for NBB's first title.
The Fundamentals of Extremism is endorsed by bestselling author John Shelby Spong, and other celebrities and scholars including Richard Dawkins, Gerald A. Larue, Nadine Strossen, and John M. Swomley.
