String of Assassinations Plague Nigerian Political Arena
Washington, D. C. – March 19, 2003 – American supporters of the Buhari/Okadigbo Presidential Campaign USA were shocked and saddened to learn about the brutal assassination of Dr. Marshall Harry, a pioneer of the All Nigerian People Party (ANPP), well-known philanthropist and a fierce supporter of democracy for Nigerians.
We are deeply grieved and outraged to lose yet another champion of democracy such as Dr. Harry and our prayers are with his family and friends," said Chinua Akukwe, Chairman of Campaign USA. His actions, and the actions of so many others who have recently been robbed of life in the cause for a democratic Nigeria, fueled the hopes of Nigerian citizens…their murders are further proof that Nigeria needs the leadership of Drs. Muhammadu Buhari and Chuba Okadigbo to heal the wounds of the current administrations inaptitude and inaction, particularly, in its repeated failure to protect the life and property of Nigerian citizens."
Harrys assassination is among those of other prominent members of the ANPP, but Campaign USA supporters feel that the untimely deaths of so many dedicated advocates of justice can only result in stronger unification behind the Buhari/Okadigbo ticket and serve as proof to the world of the injustices plaguing Nigerian politics.
Political assassinations are known to many nations yet Nigeria has seen a spate of needless deaths in the recent months as the election in April grows closer. ANPP members have witnessed numerous members fall prey to what they believe is foul play. One of such reckless killings is Ogbonnia Uche (OGB), an ANPP Senatorial candidate from orlu senatorial district in the southeastern region of Nigeria. Campaign USA supporters feel that the senseless deaths of so many advocates for freedom is a reflection of the true colors of the present administration.
A Buhari-Okadigbo Campaign USA supporter, Bobby Stafford, commended Harry, Ogbonnia and other fallen heroes of the ANPP for following their hearts and convictions that Nigeria and her people deserve equality and unfettered freedom" and added, Is the smothering of freedom and democracy worth taking such drastic actions?"
Murder should not be synonymous with Nigerian politics," said Mr. Salisu Abdullah, chapter coordinator for New York/Tri-State campaign supporters. We are outraged by these repeated acts of cowardly violence and brutality, and the present administration must be held accountable for the senseless killings."
