Juror, E. Lynne Moss, Senior Editor of American Artist Magazine has selected Surreal Self-Portrait," an oil painting on linen by acclaimed contemporary international artist James Xavier Barbour for inclusion in the annual international juried exhibition REALISM 2003" at The Stage Gallery in Merrick, New York.
James Xavier Barbour is a leading contemporary figurative realist painter and sculptor specializing in narrative work. He has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and has been called one of the top serious realist painters exhibiting work today to look out for.
His selection for this event was especially significant since this piece was one of only twenty-three works selected from among thousands of slide entries from throughout the world. The exhibition displays realistic and/or imaginary work in oils, prints, mixed media pieces, and drawings.
The exhibition will run February 28 through April 13, 2003. The artists reception, open to the public, will be held on the last day April 13, 2003 from 6-8 PM.
The gallery is located in The Stage Theater building at 2222 Hewlett Avenue in Merrick, with its entrance on Sunrise Highway directly beneath the Merrick Long Island Railroad Station, about 35 minutes from Manhattan. It is easily accessible from all major metropolitan area highways, has ample parking, and is handicapped accessible. For further information call the gallery at 516 797 9115.
James Xavier Barbour received his BFA in Painting from The Hartford Art School, and a dual Masters of Fine Arts degree in both Figurative Painting and Anatomy at The New York Academy of Art. He has also studied in traditional oil and fresco techniques of Old Master's in Italy and at the Art Students League of NY.
