Buhari/Okadigbo Supporters Demand Energy Accountability from Obasanjo Regime

Washington, D.C. - March 25, 2003 – A spokesman for the Buhari-Okadigbo Presidential Campaign USA announced today that despite massive governmental investments to improve the ongoing electricity shortfall in Nigeria, the Obasanjo-led government continues to fail in providing Nigerian citizens with the electricity necessary for their health and survival.

The Obasanjo regime has failed miserably to rectify the dilapidated power production infrastructure of Nigeria," said Bob Black, an American engineer and Campaign USA supporter. In the absence of reliable and steady electricity, the country as a whole suffers immeasurably."

Currently, Nigeria has a total installed power generation capacity of 4,000 MW, derived from both hydro and thermal power plants. However, the actual power generation reported is typically between 1,500 to 2,500 MW. Joseph Makoju, managing director of National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), has stated that the power demand for the country is at least 10,000 MW and, in a recent report, Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, Director General of the Nigerian Bureau of Public Enterprises, termed the state of electrical production in Nigeria as abysmal" and in a spiral of decline."

This is just one of the many problems created by the Obasanjo government and yet another reason to support leadership of Drs. Muhammadu Buhari and Chuba Okadigbo," said Dr. Emanuel Ozah, a Campaign USA supporter. A good leader ensures that the governed are provided with their basic needs and desires, and poverty of any kind constitutes a hindrance to true democracy."

In ongoing messages to Nigerian voters, Campaign USA members continue urging them to take a close look at the platform put forth by Drs. Buhari and Okadigbo citing it as the most balanced and efficient representation to move Nigeria towards a true and complete democracy." They also point out that Nigerian public monies have disappeared along with electricity.

Are you better off today after four years of unreliable electricity?" a Campaign USA release asked Nigerian voters. If not, make your vote count by casting your support with the Buhari/Okadigbo team…allow the policies of Muhammadu Buhari and Chuba Okadigbo to bring reliable government back to Nigeria!"
