The inaugural Mosaics Exhibition from the Mosaic Association of Australia will be held from Wednesday May 14th through to Sunday May 18th at the Mosaic Madness studio in Rozelle. Whether you are a budding mosaicist looking to exhibit, a keen art investor, or just interested in what this popular art form brings, you can join in the exhibition at the Mosaic Madness studio. The opening night is Wednesday May 14th from 6.30pm. The exhibition is free and open to the public from 10am to 5pm daily.
The Mosaic Association of Australia (or Mos-Oz" as it is affectionately known) was formed in response to the growing interest in mosaics as an art form in Australia. A group of enthusiasts pooled their energies in March 2002 and launched the Association. As the only organisation of its kind in Australia, the Association is committed to furthering the interests of mosaic artists nationwide. The Association caters for a range of people, from students of the art wishing to obtain advice on the various techniques through to professional artists wishing to exchange their ideas and share their expertise.
Mos-Oz is the brainchild of Nola Diamantopoulos, a well-known mosaic artist based in Sydneys Rozelle. The culture of Mos-Oz very much reflects Nola's sincere belief that everybody is creative. Under Nolas' guidance, the Association encourages students to take a more adventurous approach to their designs and challenges them to explore their creativity through this art form.
May 2003 is also a very important personal milestone for Nola – she is celebrating five years in business. Nola is not only an artist and the President of Mos-Oz but today she runs courses that range from mosaics to art right through to creativity and empowerment.
Nolas story is truly one of someone who discovered an artist within. Leaving behind her corporate role in taxation Nola started with a home based studio, then moved to Blackwattle studios and now just five years on she owns her own studio – an old firestation in Rozelle.
With the aim to bring out the creativity that exists within each of us, Nola operates as an artist, businesswoman, educator and teacher. The first five years has meant sacrifices, but also many successes," Nola added. Im really excited to see what the next five years will bring!"
Today teaching is an important aspect of what Nola does, the Mosaic Madness school offers several creative and technical courses for the mosaicist, and the art school offers specialist courses for the strictly beginner in painting and drawing. Through accelerated learning programs based on drawing and self-portraiture, Nola believes in challenging her students with the idea: What do you think you cant do?"
