The Incredible Christian Hulk !
A Christian Hulk?! Well...not exactly, but the new book by authors Jerry Y. Ching and Mike Onghai puts a fresh comic-book spin on a Christian childrens book called, "The Greatest King." Written for six to nine year olds used to having fast-paced and action-filled fare, this graphic novel / picture book is aiming to capitalize on the reenergized comic-book industry and its stranglehold on the Hollywood box office.
Tiptoeing carefully between the sacred words of the Bible and an urge to entertain in an action-y mainstream movie style, Ching and Onghai were able to execute a well-balanced narrative that surprisingly dwells in both religious and secular worlds. Kids that are not used to reading religious material will probably be sucked into the nimble , exciting story and eventually get the simple message of real greatness and humility embodied in Jesus Christ. Religion-savvy kids,on the other hand, will surely enjoy something that could actually be comfortable sitting on a shelf in a comic book store and still deliver the religious punch that their parents desire.
Succinctly written in a easy to read format, "The Greatest King" is a story about a mean young Prince who is banished by his father, the King, who tells him not to return until he has found the "greatest" king. The journey takes the petulant Prince to distant kingdoms where he meets three great and powerful kings who perform feats of strength and magic. In true comic-book fashion, one of the kings has attributes that are eerily similar to the Hulk while the two other kings could have come out straight from Harry Potter with its religious spin on wizardry and humour. These three kings eventually lead our young Protagonist to Jesus Christ in Calvary. You can probably guess who turns out to be The Greatest King!
Ably illustrated with colorful art and just enough preachiness to get the message across, The Greatest King would probably fit well in both religious and secular bookshelves. Chings experience as a Disney animator on films such as Mulan, Emperors New Groove and Casper serve him well in telling a clear story and Onghais publishing experience keeps the writing brief and to the the point. Not a bad effort! The book is available at Amazon.com and through their website, www.thegreatestkingbook.com.
