Public Health and Education in Nigeria is a non profit 501(c)(3)organization formed by a group of professional Nigerians living in the United States. The mission of the organization is to offer education, health, and human services to Nigerians in Nigeria in an effort to enhance their ability to contribute to the socioeconomic, environmental and cultural fabric of the country". The organizations name reflects the combined vision of the founders and mirrors the interests of all its members and operates under the premise that health care and education are not only important economic factors in Nigeria but also fundamental human rights for all citizens.
PHENIGs primary objective is to improve public health and education among Nigerians. With the successful implementation of programs geared towards specific communitys needs, PHENIG envisions healthy families and communities in Nigeria. The group serves as an advocate of and catalyst for improvement in the present status of health and education in Nigeria. PHENIG believes in listening to the voice of the people in need . The approach adopted by PHENIG is the Maslows Hierarchy of Needs". This approach allows PHENIG to identify the needs of the people" and provide opportunities to satisfy those needs in stages. PHENIG will predefine phases within each program/project, gather and tally statistics prior to initiating each program/project, and gather and tally statistics upon completion of each program/project.
Projects currently under works by PHENIG include:
(i.) HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Project in at risk" population in Nigeria. PHENIG is implementing a school based HIV/AIDS awareness program designed to integrate HIV/AIDS prevention education into the school curriculum in elementary and high schools in rural communities within Nigeria. The premise is based on the notion of educating the youth on the dynamics of HIV/AIDS within an already established learning facility such as a school. PHENIG believes that in order to effectively deliver the message of prevention, it should be targeted to our" youth who not only represent the highest number of new infections in Nigeria, but are also the most impressionable group of our" civil society. PHENIG looks to bring HIV/AIDS education into classrooms through curriculum modification and integration and challenge students in a manner similar to other such subjects as Mathematics and English; and a
(ii.) Universally Free School Breakfast Project for a preselected elementary school" in Lagos State, Nigeria. PHENIG has performed research and selected an elementary school on the outskirts Lagos State to conduct an effort of feeding all the students of the class breakfast for a predefined period of time. This project is intended to demonstrate the words, A settled mind is a sound mind"; proving that a mind that is clear of concerns for a meal will equate to a mind that is more willing and able to focus on education.
The goal of PHENIG is to transpose the effects of these projects nationwide and influence the overall health and education system in Nigeria. In addition to the above-mentioned projects, a few other projects currently in the development phase are:
(i.) Operation Clothe the Nation" Project; a project within the Population Assistance Program whereby donated clothing will be distributed to the needy in Nigeria. It is PHENIGs intention to seek out areas of need within Nigeria, predefine a location and a population sect and distribute donated clothing and items to the needy; and
(ii.) Guardian Compensation Grant" Project; a project whereby poor families in rural areas will be compensated for loss of income when their children attend school instead of working. Once we understand that a child from a less privileged household is used as a source of income for the for that family, we can then understand that a mere intention to abolish and implement rules and regulations to prohibit child labor is not nearly enough to solve the problem. There is a need to supplement the lost income (that would have been otherwise realized by the child if he/she had worked) as a result of the child attending school. This project is a scholarship project for families in rural areas, so that their children can be allowed to exchange the hardness of working for the hope of learning by attending school. It is our intention to pay these families a wage every month to serve as an incentive for the parents to encourage the child to attend school. Indeed, this project is intended as a bridge to be used as the key and central element of a global plan to fight poverty putting children first.
