"The Music Man" Entertains in Santa Cruz

Kids on Broadway Presents The Music Man" June 20 to June 29, 2003 at Louden Nelson Community Center, Santa Cruz. www.kidsonbroadway.org

Childrens joy of performing is at the heart of The Music Man," making it a fitting choice for Kids on Broadways late spring 2003 show. Fifty-five exuberant and talented children, ages 8 to 16, will be singing and dancing for ten performances at Louden Nelson Community Center (301 Center St., Santa Cruz) from June 20 to June 29, 2003. You dont want to miss this dazzling spectacle of rhythm, song, dance and unabashed fun.

This old-fashioned musical comedy, set in 1912, revolves around "Professor" Harold Hill, a con-man who--in order to sell band instruments--convinces the citizens of River City, Iowa that he can teach their children to play in a magnificent marching band. Hill's scheme is to leave town with a tidy profit in his pocket just as the kids' uniforms and instruments arrive. But Hill doesn't count on falling in love with the town librarian, and instead of skipping town before the instruments arrive, he finds love–and the children get their chance to perform.

"The Music Man" opened on December 19, 1957 and ran for 1375 shows. It won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Author, Composer and Lyricist. Its cast album won the Grammy Award (the first ever), while the score for the film won an Academy Award. Memorable songs include: 76 Trombones," Til There Was You," Gary, Indiana," and Goodnight, My Someone."

Kids on Broadway (KOB), a non-profit corporation, has trained over 800 students, ages 6 to 18, in all areas of theatrical production: acting, singing, dancing, and improvisation. Known for its vital energy, elaborate sets, stunning costumes, and imagination, Kids on Broadway has blossomed into one of Santa Cruz's most recognizable performing arts groups for youth. KOB provides vital personal growth experiences that develop more productive and confident kids.
