Symphogen continues to strengthen its patent position

Issuance of a European patent for methods to produce recombinant polyclonal antibodies broadens Symphogen's intellectual property

Copenhagen, Denmark, June 25, 2003: The Danish biotech company Symphogen A/S today announced the issuance of a European patent, EP 744,958 B1, covering methods and compositions for producing recombinant polyclonal antibodies. This patent is an important milestone for Symphogen and further strengthens its position within the area of therapeutic recombinant polyclonal antibodies.

This European patent was issued to Boston University, research partner of Symphogen. Symphogen holds a world-wide exclusive license to this patent and to previously issued US patents in the same patent family. Issuance of additional key patents within this family is expected in both Europe and the US in the future.

"The granting of this patent by the European Patent Office will help build upon our solid intellectual property relating to the production of recombinant polyclonal antibodies," said Dr Kirsten Drejer, CEO of Symphogen. "It is an important element in our growth strategy, and serves to protect the value of our intellectual capital. In addition, it is a triumph for our research partner, Boston University."

Symphogen is a Danish biotechnology company established to commercialize the Symphage(TM) technology invented by Boston University researcher, Professor Jacqueline Sharon. This proprietary technology offers a method for the production of unlimited amounts of fully human, highly purified, antigen-specific, polyclonal antibody preparations, designated symphobodies. Fully human symphobodies provide a totally new class of therapeutic antibody which offer a number of advantages over current plasma-derived immunoglobulins and monoclonal antibody therapies for treatment of diseases characterized by complex target antigens, such as those found with infectious diseases, allergy, transplant rejection and cancer. The commercial potential of symphobodies is expected to be very significant. The objective of the company is to build a long-term dominant position within the field of polyclonal antibody therapy.
