SMC Breaks Barriers to Make Gigabit to the Desktop a Practical Reality

New Gigabit to the Desktop product family makes high-bandwidth connection significantly more affordable—under $50 per desktop connection

IRVINE, CA (PRWEB) June 26, 2003 – SMC Networks (www.smc.com) today announced a new line of products that underscore the companys commitment to taking ‘Gigabit to the Desktop. Two new EZ Switch 10/100/1000 Gigabit switches, one five-port and one eight-port version (SMC8505T and SMC8508T), and a 32-bit Gigabit Ethernet PCI network card, the EZ Card 1000 (SMC9452TX) lead SMCs new line of products that bring affordable Gigabit connections all the way to the desktop in any business environment—from SOHO to the enterprise. The five and eight port EZ Switch 10/100/1000 will be available in July, and carry MSRPs of $134.99 and $194.99 respectively. The EZ Card 1000, also available in July, has an MSRP of $29.99.

Anchoring the Gigabit to the Desktop family of products, the new SMC EZ Switch 10/100/1000 five and eight port switches (SMC8505T and SMC8508T) bring the blazing speed of Gigabit copper to the desktop with five or eight auto-MDIX ports backed by an 8K MAC address table to ensure support for even the largest of networks. The only switch of its kind with FCC Class B and jumbo frame support, these new switches are suitable not just for the Enterprise, but even for SOHO environments where power applications demand increased speed and bandwidth.

On the desktop itself, the new EZ Card 1000 copper Gigabit Ethernet adapter (SMC9452TX) completes the connection for Gigabit Ethernet performance all the way. A high-performance, cost-effective 32-bit PCI network adapter, the EZ Card 1000 provides an excellent solution for applications that require high-speed, highly-reliable network connectivity. Offering connectivity at 10Mbps, 100Mbps and 1000Mbps, the EZ Card 1000 (SMC9452TX) supports full duplex to maximize the networks potential speed while accommodating the existing infrastructure. Fully-complaint with IEEE standards, the SMC9452TX is the perfect solution for delivering high throughput with minimal strain on the CPU. Advanced feature like TCP and UDP Checksum, Flow Control, Jumbo Frame support, and 802.3p ensure data integrity, even under heavy loading. Those features, combined with a management toolset that includes the Virtual Cable Tester (VCT) for advanced cable diagnostics, Wake-On-LAN, SNMP and RMON, make the EZ Card 1000 an ideal choice for bringing Gigabit connectivity to todays high-performance workstations.

Once relegated to the backbone, these new EZ Switch and EZ Card Gigabit products put the advantages of Gigabit performance and bandwidth within reach for literally any power user," said Sean Keohane, SMC Networks CEO. Were excited to be breaking down the barriers to bring Gigabit to the desktop."
