NEW BOOK TRUMPETS SUCCESSES OF CIA COVERT OPERATIONS

"REACT: CIA Black Ops" by Chuck Lightfoot

When John F. Kennedy was asked what he thought about media criticism of the Central Intelligence Agency the president retorted: "The triumphs are unheralded, its failures trumpeted." Succeeding presidents vented similar sentiments about negative media reports of the CIA.

REACT; CIA Black Ops corrects this news imbalance. The author says, "In never-before-told accounts of the dark side of U.S. intelligence CIA operatives relate twenty successful covert operations against terrorists and communists prior to the breakup of the Soviet Union.

These covert warriors conducted their Black Ops out of REACT, an unacknowledged cell so secreted within the CIA's Covert Operations Section it was virtually a stand-alone entity. Controlled and directed by a few men, and accountable only to itself, REACT operated free from congressional oversight and executive orders to accomplish its purpose: "To maintain the national order by Direct Action."

Among the successes of these unsung heroes are: the Reagan/Bush-sanctioned Black Op that terminated the Islamic terrorist cell responsible for bombing the U.S. marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon in October 1983; also, the Black Op that eliminated the terrorists responsible for placing the bomb aboard Pan Am flight 103 that exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland in December 1988.

Although of no less importance, several operations recounted in REACT involved search-and-destroy missions that received little or no public attention because the would-be perpetrators were terminated preemptively.

Lightfoot says he wrote REACT because it is history. "I believe that momentous events of national consequence should not remain secrets forever. I wanted to share these accounts that were told to me by credible men whose operations would seem incredible except for the overwhelming wealth of corroborative detail."
