"The Man Who Was Too Loud": Creator of 'The Pixies' rock musical puts on a gem in Texas.
WHO: Josh Frank & Co.
WHAT: The Man Who Was Too Loud" -A rock show in 1 Act
WHEN: September 2003
WHERE: Austin, Texas
WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT...
Josh Franks The Man Who Was Too Loud"
ROCK MUSICAL?
Reason 1.
(The Artist)
Josh Frank, founder of MOMFEST, and Theater-less Theatre, whose shows over the years have included Night of the Werewolf", Golem", and Herzogs Stroszek", has always created really innovative stuff! Fresh off the creation of the Pixies Rock Musical, this is his first show after settling back down in Austin..
Reason 2.
(The Rock Musical)
The Man Who Was Too Loud" catalogues the years 1969 to 1973, when a quiet, delicate clean nosed, kid named JoJo hitched to NYC from Boston and saw the Velvet Underground, deciding to start a rock band of his own; although destined to be shrouded forever in the backdrop of history, his band The Modern Lovers, would inspire everyone from the Violent Femmes to the Sex Pistols to join a little movement called PUNK."
The Man Who Was Too Loud" is a one-act (Fictionalized) rock show in characteristic Theater-less Theatre style with a heavy emphasis on Cinematic Sound and Visuals, but with the energy that can only be harnessed in live theatre.
Reason 3.
(Johnny was a Richman)
Besides being the minstrel playing the guitar throughout the Farrelly Brothers film Theres Something About Mary", Jonathan Richman (whom the Musical is Based on) was one of the precursors to Punk, and his story and his music is the silver lining on the dirty edges of the movement that changed the world.. Based on his experiences in the Early seventies, The Man Who Was Too Loud" opens the dusty vinyl jacket of history.
Reason 4.
(As if you needed any more!)
Frank will be joined on-stage by the local musical anti-hero Stinky del Negro (acting as musical director), Adam Kahan on bass (Invincible Czars, Summer Breeze), Ezra Reynolds on keys (Free Range Bastards, W.C. Clark), and Phillip White on drums (Brown Whörnet, Adult Rodeo). An as-of-yet-to-be-named actress will Portray --A New York City Warhol Superstar-, Joey Hood as -Joey Harvard-, and Alvin Cantu as -The Disk Jockey-. Audiences can expect a dramatically unveiled hidden history of the 60s told through a colorful multimedia extravaganza (Projection Design by Damon Marlier) set to a raucous rock --and- roll soundtrack. Using what has become his trademark, Mr. Frank will take a cinematic-style approach for this 'Live Rock Documentary that will literally join the screen and stage: a treat for the film lover who yearns for something, bold, different and new.
Prices- Tickets Range from $12 (Advance @ Ruta Maya or 474-TIXS) to $15 Dollars (at door).
