History in Focus is an occasional series that takes a thematic approach to history. Each issue is designed to provide an introduction to the chosen topic and to help stimulate interest and debate. The series concentrates on highlighting books, reviews, web sites, articles and exhibitions that relate to the theme, in order to provide a quality assured information resource for learning and teaching.

The Institute of Historical Research was set up in 1921 to promote the study of history and offers a range of facilities and services, which assist the research, teaching and writing of history. It has become an important resource and meeting-place for scholars from all over the world.
