SOUTH TYNESIDE COLLEGE SETS THE STANDARDS FOR VESSEL TRAFFIC SERVICES

New standards are about to be set for Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) based on recommendations produced by experts at the South Tyneside College School of Maritime Studies & Engineering.

(PRWEB) August 17, 2003 -- The College-submitted report in July and publication is expected later in the summer. The contract was awarded by Port Skills and Safety Ltd, the national training organisation for the ports industry, which had recognised the need for a universally high standard of VTS.

The standards, covering the training and certification of VTS personnel, are consistent with the international equivalent produced by IALA (International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities).

Our standards cover all aspects of routine operations and crisis management for both operators and managers," said Chris Thompson, Head of the Marine Simulation Department at South Tyneside College. They set out a blueprint for how to deal with a wide variety of matters including emergency planning, radio communication, traffic organisation and management, collisions and man overboard incidents."

Weve also specified standards for general behaviour and management which represent the non-technical side of VTS and ensure compliance with the requirements of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. Among the key skills weve detailed for VTS operators are communication, numeracy, IT and working with others."

Added Chris: We were delighted to be awarded this contract. It clearly demonstrates the high esteem in which the College is held by the authorities and puts us right at the forefront of VTS training in the UK.

The standards will go a long way towards improving the levels of VTS safety, training, communication and organisation."
