Based on the poems of Edgar Lee Masters and adapted for the stage by Charles Aidman the dead of Spoon River, Illinois are now free to voice the secrets they guarded so well during their days on earth. Death being the great equalizer, they no longer fear the consequences that so often restrained them in life. The lawyers, prostitutes,
politicians, doctors, atheists, drunkards, housewives, preachers and scoundrels speak frankly, telling us of their lives, their pain and their pleasures. They only wish now to find the way to soothe their souls and move on to the next plain.
Director Robert Kramer has chosen purgatory as the setting from which these confused and embittered souls tell their tales. Musical Director Robert Louis Gale plays The Minstrel, the wandering soul who, through the use of numerous instruments, helps the ghosts of Spoon River sing the "Blues".
The Lakewood Cultural Center Theatre Series is generously supported by the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado - Supporting community nonprofits while highlighting the contributions of gay men and lesbians, Sheraton Denver West - 303-987-2000 and the Rocky Mountain News - Closer to Home.
