Blaster Worm Eliminated by OnDemand Softwares WinINSTALL

WinINSTALLs flexibility provides fast way to manage day to day problems in managing corporate desktops.

BONITA SPRINGS, FL (PRWEB) August 27, 2003 --- OnDemand Software, the WinINSTALL Company, today announced that its WinINSTALL Software Distribution System is helping a number of companies rapidly respond to the spreading Blaster worm virus. Small, Medium and Enterprise companies worldwide have recently used WinINSTALL to protect their computers against the Blaster worm.

The Blaster worm, also known as the DCOM Worm or Lovsan, has affected thousands of computers running Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems. In addition to propagating widely and rapidly, the worm also installs back doors on infected systems that could later allow malicious attackers to take full control of a compromised computer system.

Blaster worm is the first self-propagating worm to take advantage of a previously known buffer overflow vulnerability in a Windows interface that handles remote procedure calls (RPC). The flaw was publicly disclosed only last month and affects almost all versions of Windows, including the Windows Server 2003 operating system.

The amazing speed with which the vulnerability was exploited is a sign that companies are going to have respond to new threats even faster than they are today", said Jack Palmer, CEO at OnDemand Software. Palmer added Companies using WinINSTALL have been able to shrink the time it takes them to test and deploy patches to computing environments of 10 to 50,000 computers. This use of WinINSTALL speaks directly to the need to truly manage the lifecycle of desktops rather than concentrating on short-sighted packaging only solutions."

"Using WinINSTALL allowed us to package, test, and distribute the Microsoft RPC vulnerability patch to all of our global desktop clients in a matter of hours," said the IT Manager, Windows systems, at of one of the largest direct sellers of skin care and color cosmetics in the world. WinINSTALL allowed us to quickly and effectively install this patch in such a short amount of time."

Time Critical Distribution to Corporate Computers Have Eliminated Blaster Worm. For over 10 years, OnDemands WinINSTALL customers have quickly deployed hot fixes and updates, eliminating downtime associated with application and network failures, allowing a low cost of ownership and continued productivity.

WinINSTALL Software Distribution System, winner of seventeen industry awards, is used by over 10,000 companies worldwide - including over 80% of Fortune 500 companies - and currently supports millions of corporate desktops. Unique among its competitors, WinINSTALL lets administrators manage every aspect of client change workflow from a single console -- building software packages, patches and hot fixes, installing them with multiple methods, and managing the success or failure of those installations. WinINSTALL is integrated with leading network management platforms, such as MS SMS, CA Unicenter, and IBM Tivoli, although those network management products are not required.

We continue to see administrators finding creative ways to use WinINSTALL to solve some of the largest problems that are related to managing desktop PCs," said Mel Raff, OnDemand Chairman. Raff added, We will continue to provide easy to use, low cost functionality to WinINSTALL that can be used by the smallest and largest companies worldwide to address the ongoing need to keep corporate desktop machines available at all times."
