Hartford Mayor to Inspire Residents to Volunteer and Tutor At-Risk Readers
(PRWEB) September 14, 2003 -- Hartford Mayor to Inspire Residents to Volunteer and Tutor At-Risk Readers.
WHO: The Hartford Jewish Coalition for Literacy, a program of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford & Jewish Community Relations Council will begin its drive to recruit volunteers by featuring special guest speaker Eddie Perez, current Mayor of Hartford at its Annual Literacy Kickoff.
WHY: As many as 70% of Hartford area fourth graders read below grade level. From Preschool to Third Grade, Children Learn to Read; From Fourth Grade on, They Read to Learn. Once a Child Falls Behind, Chances for Academic and Economic Success are Dramatically Diminished.
WHAT: The Hartford Jewish Coalition, a resource of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford, trains and places individuals to work one-on-one as literacy volunteers with at-risk preschool through third grade students. Last school year, 250 volunteers conducted 5,000 reading sessions with children at 11 schools throughout Hartford and surrounding communities.
