Bizarro Cartoonist Draws on His Love of Animals for Award-Winning Comic Strip
Tulsa Native Dan Piraro Gives Exclusive Interview to PETA; peta2.com Will Now Feature Bi-Weekly Bizarro Strips
Tulsa, Okla. (PRWEB) January 23, 2004 --"I would rather crash and burn than deny my morals and my passions and my feelings about things," says vegan cartoonist Dan Piraro, creator of the widely acclaimed comic strip Bizarro, in an exclusive interview with PETAs hip, youth-oriented Web site http://peta2.com. Piraro, whose comics appear in more than 200 newspapers around the world, infuses his work with messages about animals and the injustices that humans inflict on them. He continues, "The more widely published I get, the more obligated I feel to put myself out there and say, 'These are the things I believe."
With his thought-provoking work, Piraro is not afraid of pushing buttons to stimulate dialogue. He tackled the issue of using animals in entertainment just days after Roy Horn of Siegfried & Roy fame was attacked by a tiger. He explains, "It was this white tiger on a psychiatrists couch, and he was just lying there on his back with his arms folded, just talking as he would as a patient, and he said, 'They train me to perform, and then I try to show off what I really do best, and everybody goes ballistic. And then the little caption at the bottom says, 'Court-ordered psychological evaluation."
To carry his animal-friendly messages even further, Piraro has just agreed to give Bizarro a permanent home on http://peta2.com, where his new cartoons will appear every other Thursday. And this isnt the first time that Piraro has teamed up with PETA: He designed the cover of the Spring 2002 issue of PETAs Animal Times, and he has welcomed PETA to use his comics in its publications.
Piraros complete interview is available at http://peta2.com, a Web site that promotes animal rights by motivating young people to question authority, create a stink, and change minds. The interactive site also includes celebrity interviews, bulletin boards, edgy merchandise, and downloadable recordings by many of todays hottest musicians.
