Can Dorian Save MTV?" Campaign Kicks Off in New York

Fans of the wacky "MTV Hits" kid, Dorian Davis, stand up for the guy they think ought to be the next VJ, and MTV--if it wants viewers in college back--had better listen up.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 26, 2004 --The show "MTV Hits" got a buzz in its first year when Dorian turned up as a kooky kind of comic relief on a show where kids gave--mainly--straight answers about music and pop culture. But a lot of the viewers hoped to see him moved up, and when the show cut a great deal of its panelist format in the fall of 03 to focus on the host, a number of viewers abandoned the show, and stopped watching it.

His odd--and funny--banter was a hallmark of the show, as Ian Marcello--one of the founders of the campaign--said: Whats he gonna say? Thats why its fun. And we dont have that now. Hes one of a kind."

That frustration is typical of a college crowd that finds the network--increasingly--skewing younger and--some would say--more generic with personalities and hosts.

Charismas key," said Adrienne--a media studies major--"so you dont want to get a name for the sake of a name: it wont last. Some of these guys have a spark--like Jessica Simpson--but some of the other people: I dont know. They were safe bets." But, she added: Safe bets wont fend off FUSE."

All this comes at a time when the networks under attack from FUSE and VH1, both wanting to capture the hipper, college-age audience Hits is geared to. Dorian--who built up a fan base under the radar--is seen by a lot of the viewers as a good counter to that, if the network gave him a shot: His humor speaks to a lot of people that thought MTV was dumbed down," Marcello said. Thats a good thing."

While Davis is not affiliated with the campaign, he--according to Marcello--said it was a nice gesture. Ill do all the work," Marcello said. He can just be funny."
