During the race, which covers 3,000 miles of public roads, driving a car from Grenoble to Bourg dOisans--a mere 30 miles away--can take 5 hours. With the prime viewing points of the Tour in mind, the Cyclomundo trip is designed for riders, and most is done by bike. Riding highlights for 2004 will include Mont Ventoux, Galibier, Croix de Fer, and Alpe dHuez, site of a much anticipated first-ever time trial.
Between setting out from Avignon on July 17 and rolling into Grenoble on July 24, riders will see four stages of the Tour: Carcassonne to Nīmes, Valréas to Villard-de-Lans, Bourg dOisans to Alpe dHuez, and Bourg dOisans to Le Grand Bornand.
Riders will stay in 2 and 3-star properties in Nīmes, Chabeuil, Grenoble, and in studio apartments in Oz-en-Oisans. Oz-en-Oisans is within minutes of Col du Glandon, a pass the pros will climb on July 22. From Oz-en-Oisans, there is a 20-minute gondola ride to Alpe dHuez. This well-kept local secret will bypass droves of expectant and impatient race enthusiasts stuck in traffic on the roads below!
The cost of the 7-night/8-day cycling package is 1,845 Euros based on double occupancy. It includes all breakfasts, 5 dinners, luggage transfers, van support, detailed maps and route notes, transfers from Avignon train station to Nīmes on July 17, and from Oz-en-Oisans to Grenoble on July 24.
