PurePolitics.com 2003 Person of the Year
PurePolitics.com announces its 2003 Person of the Year: The U.S. Soldier. The U.S. Soldier was selected by our visitors and editorial oversight committee of PurePolitics.com.
(PRWEB) January 27, 2004 --The Year 2003 was a year very historic year in the realm of U.S. politics and global international affairs. During 2003, we had the War on Iraq, SARS crisis, Hamas Suicide Attacks, Challenger Explosion, California Recall, terror reigns, the economy rocks and rolls, homeland security, catholic sex scandal, and rise of potential conflict with North Korea.
As Americans, it seems our paradigm of how we perceive the people, cultures, countries around the world has changed. We no longer view problems and conflicts in the Middle East, Afghanistan or Third World countries as somebody else's problems. The terror and fear of terrorism has seeped into every American household. Feeling secure within our Homeland has become so very important.
America and the world will begin the Year 2004 in a sober frame of mind. In the 27 months since Sept. 11, 2001, we have grown accustomed to living in a state of apprehension.
After Afghanistan, anthrax, SARS outbreak, Hamas suicide attacks, War in Iraq and myriad failed terrorist attempts, the war on terror is always with us. It influences all aspects of our lives -- not just at airports where we wait in long lines to pass through heightened security precautions, but in what we see at the movies, what our religious leaders tell us at prayer, how our investments in the stock market rise or fall, and whether our allies vote with or against us in international forums.
The one constant throughout the Year 2003 has been the men and the women who gave their lives serving their country, the U.S. Soldier.
The ubiquity of American solider power is extraordinary. At the end of 2003, 1.4 million men and women on active duty make up the most diverse military in our history, and yet it is not exactly a mirror of the country it defends. It is better educated than the general population and overweighted with working-class kids and minorities. About 40% of the troops are Southern, 60% are white, 22% are black.
Thousands of families across the United States have family members and friends over seas fighting and protecting the very freedoms and security that we have enjoyed as Americans for over 200 years. As President George Bush once said, "We know what works: Freedom Works. We know what's right: Freedom is right." As we reign in the Year 2004, remember that the freedoms we enjoy today can be directly correlated to the our 2003 Person of the Year: The U.S. Solider.
"We Americans of today, together with our allies, are passing through a period of supreme test. It is a test of courage-of our resolve-of our wisdom-our essential democracy." - FDR ~ Fitting words for the importance of our U.S. Military. God Bless the U.S. Soldier!
U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair polled second with President George W. Bush a close third out of eight finalists for the 2003 Person of the Year. The other five finalist were: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Former Gov. Howard Dean, Challenger Astronauts, Pope John Paul II, Prime Minster Ariel Sharon.
