Unartistically Frustrated is proud to present the world premier of DENMARK at the Strawberry One Act Festival, a production of the Riant Theatre Company, to be held at the Producers Club II. The Strawberry One-Act Festival embarks on its 10th season this winter. The brainchild of Artistic Director, Van Dirk Fisher, it is a play-competition in which the audience and the theatre's judges cast their votes to select the best play of the season. Twice a year, hundreds of plays from across the country are submitted, of which 40 are chosen to compete. Plays move from the 1st round to the semi-finals and then on to the finals. The playwright of the winning show receives a grant and the opportunity to have a full-length play developed by the Riant. The Daily News calls The Strawberry One-Act Festival "The American Idol for playwrights."
DENMARK, by Josh D. Robertson, is a postmodern revenge spectacle, an all-out assault on the fourth wall and above all a completely self-aware pastiche that pokes fun at its own meta-theatrics while exploring theaters Elizabethan roots. This work responds to Shakespeare's challenge that "all the world is a stage." It follows the exploits of a theater company trying to produce/sabotage a rendition of Hamlet. The cast and crew must subsequently face the fact that they are themselves characters in a performance, and ultimately the product a young NYU graduates twisted lucubrations. Theater ensues.
