28 Year-Olds Envisioned Future Now A $17M Reality
The founder of one of North America's fastest growing franchises celebrates achieving the lofty vision he set five years ago.
Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) January 30, 2004 --In 1998, prior to franchising his concept, Brian Scudamore wrote his two-page 'painted picture -- a detailed description of exactly where his junk removal company, 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, would be at the end of five years. The then 28 year old, one city junk hauler, envisioned to have operations in the top 30 metropolitan cities in North America by the end of 2003. Scudamores prediction was bang on. He completed the 30th and final metro during the last week of 2003. After seeing the power in his vision coming to fruition, Scudamore has started teaching all 87 of his Franchise Partners the importance of being able to 'see the future.
When Scudamore was sitting on the dock outside his parents waterfront cottage crafting his vision, his company was generating just under $1 million in revenues. He had absolutely no franchise experience and no expertise in forecasting, but he had an incredible sense of faith. I didnt know how it would happen, I just knew that it would," says Scudamore.
Scudamores picture was incredibly accurate -- in fact almost eerie. My team was so aligned with the vision that we had no choice but to make it happen," says Scudamore. In the beginning, people thought I was nuts. I didnt even have my first franchise, yet I promised to create a North American-wide brand." So Scudamore and his team began checking off their predictions as they happened: A presence in the top 30 metros, annual growth of 90%, 59% repeat business in established markets, a story carried through the Associated Press, and even a feature on Oprah.
Scudamore teaches his Franchise Partners three keys to creating a vision: 1) It must clearly paint the picture of the franchises vision; exactly what the business will look like, feel like and act like at a future point in time -- It must become a crystal ball of sorts. 2) One must never, ever, question their vision or their ability to get there. 3) One must post the vision (Scudamores vision is posted on the front wall at his corporate head office, 'The Junktion) to serve as an endless reminder to everyone on the team as to where theyre headed.
For 2003, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? generated $17.5 million in revenues with 87 Franchise Partners. In 2006, Scudamores junk removal empire will have 250 franchise partners and $100 million in sales. Our visions happen because we make them happen. Were already well on our way," Scudamore claims, Our 2006 painted picture details exactly where well be."
