Vernier Networks Implements "Touchless" Security for Wireless Networks at San Juan College
Verniers Wireless Network Security Helps to Broaden the Use of Computers - Both Inside and Outside the Classroom - by Providing Secure and Convenient Wireless Access to Students, Faculty and Administrators
(PRWEB) January 5, 2004 --http://www.verniernetworks.com - The Vernier Networks System offers San Juan College, the fourth largest institution of higher education in New Mexico, convenient network access and wireless services for the college community without compromising IT security or creating unmanageable support burdens for the IT staff.
When overhauling its IT infrastructure San Juan College had three principal objectives for the wireless network security and management system they would put in place:
The system should work with whatever combination of hardware and software end users already were using. It shouldn't require either end users or the IT staff to install or configure any new hardware or software in order to secure or initiate wireless access. Further, the IT department should not have to touch anything -- therefore it should be a touchless" security system.
The network security and management system itself would have to be easy to install, configure, and manage. It would have to integrate easily with the existing network and not require a lot of custom programming or maintenance. The network management system should reduce the IT staff's workload, not increase it.
The solution should support future wireless services, such as location-specific services and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephones, which require continuous connectivity for roaming users.
The Vernier Networks System has enabled the college to meet all its goals for securing and managing the wireless network.
The touchless" security solution for which the San Juan IT staff was searching for was found in the Vernier Networks Systems. Whenever a new user tries to access the college's wireless network, the Vernier system detects the user's activity and displays a login page. Students, faculty, and staff login using their college Active Directory accounts, and unauthorized users are denied all access to the network. The Vernier system's authentication controls work with all standards-based devices and require no additional configuration, installation, or training procedures on the part of end users or the IT staff.
The college's end users benefit from the security and management features of the Vernier Networks System without having to learn anything new or follow any special procedures. Because there's no new software to install or new procedures to learn, the college has been able to introduce wireless networking without increasing the workload of the help desk.
The college didn't need to reconfigure or replace any of its existing network infrastructure in order to benefit from the security and management features of the Vernier Networks System. And, the convenience of secure wireless access is leading to a broader use of computers both inside and outside the classroom at San Juan College.
San Juan College is ready for the future with their touchless", convenient, easy to use, and easy to administer wireless network security from Vernier Networks.
