" There is all this talk about empowering women and, equal opportunities, and, we see a wrath of initiatives and funding by the government on these issues, but asked a woman and, she will tell you, 'money empowers' women'.
There are no limits to what you can achieve when it is you're own business, we have women going for $17 million pound contracts, there's only 2 actually working in the business from a porter cabin. Owning your own business can really 'empower '.
Recent research by Barclays Bank showed that a third of all businesses with a turnover of 1 million are owned by women, and, a huge factor influencing 'kitchen table' start-ups is the flexibility that running your own business allows.
Although there's a staggering 400,000 new businesses started every year in the UK, with over 100,000 set-up by women, within their first year, one in five of these small businesses will fail.
Access to the initial 'start-up capital' is cited as a major issue for many new start-ups, and, women face far more barriers than their male counterparts.
Yet, the UK government spent reported 2.5 billion a year on business support, which by the governments own admissions does not seem to be helping businesses, and, women fair badly as they often don't get to hear about business grants or other initiatives until it is to late.
If the government focused on initiatives that would actual give women more access to adequate start-up capital instead of them having to be reliant on their credit cards for example to finance their start-ups, can you imagine what women could achieve?
We only have to look at founder of 'Stagecoach Theatre Arts Schools UK ', which was started by Stephanie Manuel, who typically was refused by her then, 'bank', the loan of 4,000 to start 'Stagecoach'. Although today Stagecoach has 420 schools throughout the UK, and, offers UK, and, worldwide 'Stagecoach franchise'...." Jean Bartlett, Director The Bag Lady.
