Comedian declares he is proud to be a nigga

Comedian stirs debate over usage of provocative word and its usage by people of any color.

(PRWEB) January 12, 2004 --Comedian Kirk Noland is proud to be a nigga. This veteran of the standup comedy circuit makes no bones about his declaration that he is a nigga and wants the world to know it.

Long known as a top headliner in comedy clubs nationwide, Noland recently was jailed and spent time in a maximum security facility where he says he underwent niggerization."

I am a middle-aged, regular Joe who ended up in jail and realized there was no color issue," said Noland, whose racial heritage is Hispanic and Caucasian. We were all niggas in the system. The system saw us all the same." The experience changed his life. He now knows firsthand the plight shared by many other Americans who are caught up in a criminal justice system that sees you as guilty until proven wealthy."

Nolands new show and up coming CD, entitled Proud to be a Nigga," is meant to shake up common perceptions of the provocative word and its usage by people of any color.

I realized from my time in jail that if you are not wealthy, then you are just another nigga waiting to be put into the criminal justice system," Noland said. If you are a black male in the United States, you will have about a one-in-three chance of going to prison during your lifetime. For a Hispanic male, it's one in six; for a white male, one in 17. Part of Websters definition of nigger is a member of a socially disadvantaged class of persons. Nobody is more disadvantaged than people who dont have the money to fight a system that wants to keep them incarcerated."

A portion of Nolands new show will give audiences an insiders look at a system that imprisons more than 5.6 million Americans. That is a terrifying number, considering that violent crime is down while incarceration numbers are on the rise. For Noland, the show is an opportunity to change the way people think about a word most consider vulgar. It means you are part of a class of people fighting against a system that is trying to keep you subservient to it," Noland said. I say be a nigga and be proud!"

Congressman Ron Dellums once said, It's time for somebody to lead all of America's niggers . . . all the people who feel left out of the political process." Kirk Noland wants to do just that.
