U.S. Senate Candidate Danney Ball To Hold Press Conference Supporting Groups That Oppose The Proliferation Of Gaming Establishments In California

Demonstration By Anti-Casino Activists To Preceed Luncheon Speech By Ball At California Republican Assembly Convention In Santa Clara

Hemet, CA (PRWEB) January 16, 2004 --A press conference has been scheduled for 10am, January 17, in Santa Clara at The Embassy Suites this Saturday. Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate Danney Ball will speak in support of several groups including citizens of Rohnert Park who are fighting to keep a new gambling facility out of their community.

"The people of California must hear both sides of this story" said Ball. "There will be serious consequences from the proliferation of gaming in the state and we need to take a look at this now - not after we have places to gamble on every street corner. Many are just looking at this as a way to raise tax revenue. We are looking at it and the cost to our kids and our families. Gambling has social implications that we feel most people have not considered." Ball continued.

The purpose of the news conference is to help create an awareness in our communities throughout California of the problems associated with gaming, and to promote dialog on both side of the issue. Clearly, gambling is associated with higher crime rates, an increase in alcohol related traffic accidents, and higher use of illegal drugs and drug
dealing.

"Maybe it is time to call a halt to the building of more casinos in favor of building other types of profitable industries on the reservations in California. Threatening the Indian tribes with licensing off-reservation card rooms for one-arm-bandits will only
bring more competition, less profits, and possible failures. Do Californians really desire this much readily available gaming in their neighborhoods?" said Ball.

The demonstration will bring people representing several different organizations together to protest the building of more casinos in California as well as other concerned citizens. The public is invited and encouraged to join in and let their voice be heard. Please bring hand lettered signs. The demonstration will begin at 9am.

"The conservative stand on this needs to be let's do what is right for our communities, our state, and especially for future generations. Californians need good jobs. Let's try concentrating on building good sound businesses that we can be proud of - not places that degrade our cities and promote losing the family budget to games of chance. This
is just the right thing to do." said Ball.

The Embassy Suites Hotel is located at 2885 Lakeside Drive in Santa Clara. A follow-up demonstration and news conference will take place in Rohnert Park on Monday, January 19, at 11am on the site where a casino is planned to be built.

There will also be a community lunch Monday at 12 noon and a dinner with Danney Ball at 6pm at The Star Cafe in Rohnert Park to discuss follow-up plans in the ongoing fight to protect California from rampant growth of the gaming industry. All meetings are open to the community and everyone is invited.

"You cannot help men permanently by doing what they could and should do for themselves. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence" --Abraham Lincoln
