(PRWEB) January 20, 2004 --9th Annual Institute for Travel & Guidebook Writing and Photography

The 9th annual Institute for Travel & Guidebook Writing and Photography takes place May 21-23, 2004, in Orlando, Florida. Partners are the Society of American Travel Writers and the Orlando Downtown Development Board.

The institute covers 15 hours of instruction for writers, experienced travelers and others considering careers in article and guidebook work.

A faculty of six senior writers, photographers and editors instructs in topics that include a survey of travel and guidebook writing; article queries and book proposals; contracts and negotiations; editor-publisher relations; how the work gets done; webzines and e-guidebooks; self publishing; marketing and photography.

Instructors and their major credits include: Meredith M. Babb (assistant editor in chief, University Press of Florida); Tom Brosnahan (Turkey Travel Planner, Lonely Planet, Frommer Guides); Lee Foster (YellowBrix.com, Globe-Pequot); Herb Hiller (Fodors, Pineapple Press); M. Timothy OKeefe, Ph.D. (former head, Journalism Division, Nicholson School of Communication, University of Central Florida; six self-published guidebooks) and Bruce Whipperman (Moon).

Instruction is intense, the ambiance collegial. Relationships extend for years after," says institute chairman Herb Hiller.

Graduates tell me what they especially value is our realistic approach that debunks the glamour and targets careers. Goals get set, projects unearthed. Articles and books result."

Registration of $345 covers course materials, most meals, breaks and social events including a reception sponsored by the Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Rooms at the host hotel, The Courtyard at Lake Lucerne, are $89. Visit Florida, the official tourism marketing corporation for the state of Florida, provides marketing support.

In its 48th year, the Society of American Travel Writers is a non-profit professional association of writers, editors, photographers, electronic media journalists and public relations representatives.
