Findings Show Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Is Preventable

What is the leading known cause of mental and physical birth defects, surpassing both spina bifida and Down syndrome? Which drug produces more severe abnormalities in a developing fetus than heroin, cocaine, or marijuana? The answer to both questions is the same: alcohol. Alcohol (wine, beer, or liquor) is the most common preventable cause of birth defects in the United States" (http://www.kidshealth.org). In a compelling story, author Kerri Malloy leads readers to understand more about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and the impact it has on two lives.

(PRWEB) January 21, 2004 --When a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy, she risks giving birth to a child who will pay the price - in mental and physical deficiencies - for the rest of his life. Yet many pregnant women do drink alcohol, and it is estimated that one in every 750 infants is born with full-blown fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) each year in the United States. Another 50,000 children are born with fetal alcohol effects (FAE) each year" (http://www.kidshealth.org).

Kerri Malloy uses her own lifes experiences to write the book Face the Music available from American Book Publishing. It is a story about the journey of two endearing characters, Lana and Trevor, struggling to overcome personal tragedies and to open themselves to love. The poignant tale of loss and renewal also touches on the very contemporary medical issue of fetal alcohol syndrome and its effects on children and their families. Many people have never heard about FAS and this book presents an engaging look at relationships and the difficult choices we make in our lives. The novels celebration of love and perseverance in the face of heartbreaking tragedy will speak volumes to anyone who has experienced any sort of loss.
