Don't Blame the Manager!

Low levels of worker satisfaction in the UK have often been blamed on poor management. A new study shows the real reason is psychological.

(PRWEB) February 5, 2004 --According to the latest report by Business Analytic, a statistical consulting and organizational research services provider, fewer than six out of ten UK employees are committed to their company, less than almost anywhere else in Europe.

However, these seemingly abject results do not mean UK managers are no good at their jobs, claims Dr. Garry Gelade, the reports author, who says that British bosses are as good as any in the world.

Dr. Gelade explains: Business writers often blame the UKs low commitment levels on poor management and weak leadership, but this latest study shows that national commitment levels depend strongly on psychological and economic factors.

Statistically, extravert countries, such as Israel, have higher levels of employee commitment than introvert countries, such as China. Levels of commitment tend also to be low in countries like Japan, which have high levels of neuroticism.

Neurotic personalities are prone to negative feelings like anxiety and depression, and these people are more likely to experience upsetting feelings at work. This, in turn, reduces levels of commitment."

The study also showed that employee commitment is low in high-growth economies and vice-versa.

Dr Gelade adds: Blaming UK managers for the low level of commitment of the British workforce is too simplistic. When you consider our national psychology and the effects of the economy, UK plc is right on the money."
