Valley Health And Hyperbarics In Brewster, New York Uses Innovative Oxygen Therapy With High Tech "Suit Therapy" For Teaching New Skills And Maximizing Potential For Children With Neuromuscular Disorders

Cutting edge technology is being used at Valley Health and Hyperbarics in Brewster, New York to provide children with neuromuscular disorders, such as Cerebral Palsy, the opportunity to receive intensive physical therapy that once was only offered in Europe.

(PRWEB) February 5, 2004 --Cutting edge technology is being used at Valley Health and Hyperbarics in Brewster, New York to provide children with neuromuscular disorders, such as Cerebral Palsy, the opportunity to receive intensive physical therapy that once was only offered in Europe. In the United States most children receive only 1 to 2 hours of therapy per week at Valley Health therapy is provided 20 hours per week.

Intensive therapy can teach a child new skills in a short period of time that can continue to improve even after therapy is complete. This is possible through the TheraSuit, Universal Exercise Units and highly trained and skilled therapists who maximize the childs potential," says Jo Benincasa-Feingold, M.D., President and Medical Director of Valley Health and Hyperbarics. We believe many children with disabilities have so much potential, that with the right combination of therapies, such as Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and then intensive physical therapy using the TheraSuit the child can be propelled forward toward greater independence."

The TheraSuit is made up of a vest, shorts, knee pads and special shoes. They are attached by using bungee type bands that are used to correctly align the body and provide resistance as movements are performed. The main function of the Suit is to improve and change awareness of where the body is in space, reduce pathological reflexes, restore proper pattern of movement and load the body with weight similar to gravitational forces while in correct alignment. While in the Suit, the child is put through a series of exercises targeting their developmental needs. The child can be seen sitting, rolling, crawling, tall kneeling, walking, performing sit ups, push ups and much more.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the medical treatment that enhances the bodys natural healing process through the inhalation of 100% pure oxygen in a chamber where atmospheric pressure is controlled and maintained above atmospheric pressure.

Oxygen Therapy is short-term, high-dose oxygen inhalation therapy, but with long lasting effects. It is an extremely valuable tool in the treatment of a multitude of acute and chronic disease states, as well as in traumatic injuries, and before and after certain types of surgery.

Depending upon the patient, the oxygen level in the bloodstream is raised by a factor of up to 10 times normal. In this type of environment, oxygen is also delivered to tissues differently and more efficiently-the oxygen is carried in the plasma and other cells in addition to the red blood cells. Among other actions, this leads to the promotion of healing damaged tissue and the control of infection.
