TOLLBOOTH Opens New Public Art Viewing Destination in Downtown Tacomas Theater District

Artrod presents the Worlds Smallest Gallery dedicated exclusively to video and paper based fine arts. Located just north of the intersection at 11th and Broadway in downtown Tacoma, this is the theater districts newest free art viewing venue entitled the TOLLBOOTH Gallery.

Tacoma, WA (PRWEB) February 5, 2004 --Artrod partnered with the City of Tacomas Arts Commission to transform an old abandoned concrete kiosk into this innovative and user-friendly media arts space. This is a brilliant way to deliver street level public art to the City and provide more public exposure to experimental media" says the City of Tacomas Public Art Administrator Amy McBride This programming is truly unique and will garner exposure on a national level." The work of eight different artists or artist teams will be featured at the TOLLBOOTH in 2004.

The inaugural TOLLBOOTH exhibit debuted on December 31, 2003 in conjunction with Tacomas New Year celebration: First Night. Artists Jared Pappas-Kelley and Corey Lund created the multi-media installation "Some Say She Lost Her Head" that encompasses found video footage and an original soundtrack displayed on the Tollbooths monitor, with a public-interactive paper based element on the reverse. Viewers are invited to add to the installation by coloring the missing head with provided chalk. Music emanates from the kiosk eliciting another response from the pedestrians, making them aware of the moving pictures on the 24" monitor safely housed within the structure. Some Say She Lost Her Head" is truly beautiful in its use of vintage film footage compounded with modern technique and an original soundtrack.

Some Say She Lost Her Head" has been called breathtaking" by Olympia filmmaker Denise Smith, and is a lyrical meditation that dissects three and a half seconds of film into a fanciful dance of speculation"
