Defense Contracts Hurt Poverty Reduction
Californias Share of Defense Contracts Could End World Hunger
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 7, 2004 -- The people of California could end hunger worldwide for the amount they spend financing defense contracts. California taxpayers spend over $23 billion a year on defense contracts, while an estimated $19 billion a year could end world hunger.
The defense budget has very little to do with defense," said Clint Borgen, CEO of Borgen Project Inc. a political research and communication group. If people realized how politically motivated many contracts are I think there would be a serious backlash."
In a world of 191 nations the U.S. accounts for 40 percent of defense spending making it by far the largest military spender.
This is the true cost of a bloated defense budget," Borgen said. When one state could end world hunger for what goes toward defense contracts it gives you a sense of how insane the spending has gotten."
