Its a treasure hunt," says owner Bryan Owens. Every day is just like Christmas here -- we never know what were going to find. Currently in stock, we have a huge 40.95 carat natural emerald, and several mink coats. Believe it or not, weve had a medicine-man stick adorned with a shrunken head. Back in the eighties we got a well-traveled Gucci suitcase that was packed with Egyptian artifacts that dated back to 1500 B.C."
Unclaimed Baggage Center is a one-of-a-kind store snuggled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Founded in 1970 by Doyle and Sue Owens as a part-time business, it soon became a full-time venture. In the ensuing years, the Owens have seen their company prosper as one of the great 'hidden' bargain centers for savvy shoppers.
In 1995, Bryan Owens, son of the founder, acquired Unclaimed Baggage Center and directed the expansion that includes the current contemporary retail store that covers more than a city block. The store has many amenities for the nearly one million shoppers each year, including a Concierge Desk to help guests, a play area for children and newly remodeled café - serving a gourmet menu and Starbucks Coffee.
More than 7,000 items are stocked each day. About 60% of the merchandise is clothing with the balance of the store dedicated to cameras, electronics, sporting goods, jewelry, designer optical, books and of course, luggage. The vast majority of items are from unclaimed baggage which, after at least 90 days of intensive tracking by the airlines, are declared unclaimed. Additionally, lost and unclaimed cargo is for sale in special areas of the store.
Shopping online or in the huge Scottsboro store, at Unclaimed Baggage Center everyone enjoys the treasure hunt.
