DETAILS: Law in California under Spain and Mexico provided women with certain rights and were not available in the United States under established English legal traditions. Ms. Schuele, a judicial law clerk in the United States Bankruptcy Court and the executive director of the California Supreme Court Historical Society, will compare the two systems and discuss examples of womens property rights in 19th century California.
