KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN
THE MUSICAL
Book by Terrance McNally
Music by John Kander, Lyrics by Fred Ebb
February 6, 2004 (New York, New York) -- Beautiful and talented young people are acting, singing, and dancing up a storm -- the energy is high and frenetic -- and the most anticipated theatrical event of the Pace University Spring Semester is well under way: Kiss Of The Spider Woman. This Tony-award winning musical from the dynamite composer/lyricist team responsible for such bona fide hits as Chicago and Cabaret, finds new light in an innovative, fresh production. Adapted from Manuel Puigs Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, the show features a libretto by Ragtimes Terrence McNally and starred venerable stage veterans Chita Rivera and Vanessa Williams during its successful run on Broadway. Paces inventive re-imagining of the Broadway classic features a twelve piece orchestra and a talented cast of seventeen. Performances will be March 12 and 13 at 8:00pm, and March 13 and 14 at 2:00pm at the Michael Shimmel Center for The Arts, One Pace Plaza. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $7.00 for students (with valid ID) and seniors. Reservations can be made at (212) 346-1883.
Set behind the acrid, blistering walls of an Argentine prison, Kiss of the Spiderwoman is an immensely passionate look at the ways human beings respond and exist in the face of monumental tragedy and oppression. Through the delphian eyes and exciting songs of Aurora, a screen seductress from the 1940s, we experience a complex relationship between the gay window-dresser Molina and rugged revolutionary Valentín, two of the prisons detainees. They subsist through myriad emotions, experiencing the effects and consequences of undying love, loyalty, deception, infatuation, and sacrifice. The ability to overcome oppression and the ways in which humanity struggles to escape unhappiness are two of the major themes which make up the epic sweep that is the evenings entertainment.
Kiss of the Spiderwoman is performed under the direction of senior theater major Daniel Lavender, whose Off-Broadway directorial credits include Soar Like an Eagle at the Lion Theater. He has directed and assistant directed many regional and stock performances, including Oh Boy! (Berkshire Theater Festival), Lizzie Borden (Goodspeed Opera House), and Mack and Mabel (Rhinebeck Performing Arts). He is accompanied in this production by the same creative team that brought you last semesters sweeping romance, The Last Five Years and the Spring 2003 hit tuner Brigadoon. The team also includes Kelvin Harper, president of Paces VIP dance team who will choreograph the musical sequences, and James Bedell, another senior theatre major who has designed the lighting for this and many other multimedia extravaganzas. This team is guaranteed to fire up their theatrical juices for another engaging, youthful, and vital performance for the downtown community.
