The Healthcare Management Council, Inc. Offers Online Hospital Benchmarks and Hospital Knowledge Management Tools To Assist Hospitals in Cutting Costs

The Healthcare Management Council, Inc. is a healthcare performance improvement company that offers online hospital benchmarks, long-term care benchmarks, and hospital department performance improvement knowledge management tools. HMC is a pioneer in precision hospital benchmarking and has recently unveiled new online tools to better help hospitals and long-term care facilities lower costs.

(PRWEB) February 26, 2004 --Most hospitals are spending too much money providing healthcare services. That's a staggering fact, but the evidence is all around us: healthcare provider profitability is challenged like never before. Healthcare costs are always increasing. But what does it mean for a hospital to spend too much money, and how does a hospital understand where its savings opportunities lie?

The Healthcare Management Council was formed to answer just those questions. A facility knows it is spending too much when its peer facilities spend less and achieve the same quality of care. A facility learns where its savings opportunities lie by strategic analyses of its spending in comparison to its peers.

This is what the HMC hospital benchmarks are designed to do. On the hospital side, the HMC Functional Cost Review (http://www.hmc-benchmarks.com/hospital/tools_fcr.shtml) benchmarks hospital costs by functional area. The HMC Clinical Service Review (http://www.hmc-benchmarks.com/hospital/tools_csr.shtml) benchmarks hospital costs by service line. The HMC Span of Control Review (http://www.hmc-benchmarks.com/hospital/tools_scr.shtml) benchmarks hospital organizational and management flatnees, to see where hospitals have too many managers supervising too little an area (their span of control is too narrow). Together, these benchmarking tools pinpoint where hospitals are spending more than their peers. HMC analyses contained within each benchmark then show hospitals where they can realistically reduce costs for the greatest impact.

Knowledge Management & Communities of Practice for Healthcare

Because knowing where a hospital can improve and acting on that knowledge are different enterprises, HMC introduced the HMC KnowledgeWeb for both hospitals and long-term care facilities. The expertise to reduce costs is contained within the hospital department manager community, and the HMC KnowledgeWeb finds, shares and stores that knowledge. HMC's Knowledge Managers set up and facilitate discussions among the HMC Partner community, helping each manager learn from each other's mistakes and successes. No one has to "reinvent the wheel" at each facility, operating blindly. Instead, hospital department managers can search libraries of successful strategies, pose open or directed questions to the community, and take part in surveys that compare practices across the facilities. Because of its ultimate flexibility, hospital department managers can discuss any aspect of performance improvement with the HMC KnowledgeWeb, not just budget cuts or lowering costs. Partners now join the HMC KnowledgeWeb to address challenges related to quality of care, employee retention, customer service, community outreach, and any other performance question.
