Why: To benefit Africa 2004, a medical philanthropic effort headed by Santa Monica pediatrician Dr. Robert Hamilton. For the past 16 years, the Lighthouse Medical Mission Teams have traveled to some of the most severely war-torn regions of the world to administer free medical care and medications to those in dire need. The teams also work with local physicians in the region to foster and improve practices for basic medical care. Past years teams have traveled to Nicaragua, Guatemala, The Gambia and Sierra Leone.
Traveling again to Sierra Leone in March and April 2004, all members (doctors, nurses and others) of these medical teams donate their time and pay for their own transportation, travel, meals and lodging. Therefore, all funds raised are used to underwrite the costs of transporting and purchasing much needed medications, medical supplies and equipment.
