Project Enterprise and Carver Bank to Host Savings Account Day to Teach Money Management Skills to Children and Entrepreneurs.
This years Entrepreneur Week, sponsored by Project Enterprise, will feature a Savings Account Day, co-sponsored by Carver Bank to be held at The Valley's Beacon, Wadleigh Secondary School, 215 West 114th St, Saturday, March 6, 2004 from 1:00pm -- 4:00pm. This fun-filled day of games and activities will provide Project Enterprise entrepreneurs and their children with the opportunity to open a savings account and learn the importance of good financial management. Promoting strong financial management skills is key to business and personal success," reflected Arva Rice, Executive Director of Project Enterprise. Experts agree, it is never too early to begin teaching children good money management and financial literacy skills. Follow these easy activities to begin teaching your children today.
Ages 3-5
·Identify coins and how much they are worth;
·Earn money from small jobs;
·Get a small allowance;
·Choose a toy or gift they want to buy, and then saving for it.
Ages 6-8
·Open a Savings account at a big bank;
·Compare prices and values of products at the store;
·Have a small budget;
·Earn money from an allowance and extra jobs;
·Start a very small business (lemonade stand).
Ages 9-11
·Manage a weekly or monthly budget;
·Make spending choices after comparison shopping;
·Volunteer or help in the community;
·Visit the Federal Reserve, The Mint, or your local bank.
Ages 12-14
·Learn more about stocks, bonds, money markets and CD's;
·Use the computer to track their investments;
·Order teen gift subscriptions to Black Enterprise, Hispanic Business Magazine or Money;
·Encourage teens to keep track of how they spend their allowance.
Ages 15-18
·Introduce your teen to different careers by taking them to your place of work or have them job shadow someone else;
·Talk to your teen about the risk and responsibility of credit cards;
·Calculate the cost of college with your teen;
·Take a tour of the New York Stock Exchange or visit the Museum of American Financial History.
Project Enterprise was started in 1997 to assist entrepreneurs who for a variety of reasons cannot access traditional bank credit. First loans are a maximum of $1,500 without a credit check or collateral. Larger loans, up to $12,000, are available upon timely repayment of the initial loan. Project Enterprise currently has programs in Harlem, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Mt. Vernon. Project Enterprise is one of only a few micro-credit programs in New York City that offer micro-loans under $12,000. It is the only program that offers access to capital without the restriction of credit and background checks, collateral requirements, prior business planning, and prior business experience. PE's program also provides valuable business networking, leadership development opportunities.
