Wasabi Systems Completes Comprehensive Optimization of GCC 3.3.1 and Related GNU Tools for Intel® XScale Technology Processors

Wasabi-Enhanced Toolchain Improves the Runtime Performance of Linux, BSD, and Bare-Metal Embedded Applications

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 28, 2004 --Wasabi Systems Inc., a leading provider of embedded development tools and services for open source operating systems, today announced the completion of a highly optimized GNU toolchain for Intel® XScale Technology microprocessors. The toolchain supports Linux, BSD and Bare-Metal embedded applications.

The GNU tools are the toolchain of choice for NetBSD and Linux development, and they are used extensively in the embedded world to build both OS-driven and bare-metal applications. Wasabi's GCC modifications greatly improve the runtime performance of code when benchmarked on Intel® XScale Technology microprocessors. The entire toolchain has been validated for use on Linux/IA32 and CygWin/IA32 hosts using both internal (GNU) and external test suites. Wasabi is now beginning the process of migrating the optimizations back to the FSF mainline. The optimized toolchain will be made available to developers in the near future.

"With the completion of our optimized GNU toolchain, our OEMs can now easily leverage our proven design solutions and XScale Technology microprocessors, to deploy first-class products while considerably reducing cost, risk, and time to market," said Frank G. Logan, III, CEO of Wasabi. (more) The performance-power profile of XScale Technology based processors makes them ideal for various embedded market segments including: storage, networking, and personal connectivity. Wasabi's performance-driven GCC optimizations make these targets even more appealing in embedded design scenarios.

"Wasabi Systems' performance optimizations in the GNU Toolchain should provide another option for improving our customers' ability to utilize the advanced features of our XScale processors," said Dave Boehmer, Director of Applications and Platform Engineering for Intel's Storage Components Division.

Because of its collaborations with Intel, Wasabi is uniquely positioned to provide world-class products and services for Intel XScale Technology microprocessors. In addition to optimizing the GNU tools for these targets, Wasabi offers a line of related products, including Wasabi Certified NetBSD for Intel IXDP425, Intel IQ80321, Intel DBPXA255 platforms.
