QualityLogic Announces Tool for Verifying Interoperability with PDF Files

Share Article

QualityLogic Inc. today announced a new tool designed to verify that any device or software application that reads and interprets Portable Document Format (PDF) files can do so successfully. The QualityLogic PDF InteropAnalyzer will help printer and multifunction peripheral manufacturers, driver developers, and PDF creator/producer software developers determine that their implementations will handle PDFs as they are currently used in the business environment, as well as those created using the latest releases of popular applications.

PDF has emerged as a universal, nonproprietary method of exchanging documents from product specifications distributed on the web to magazine layouts for the publishing industry. There are numerous products that can produce PDF files in five different versions of the PDF file format. The application that created the document, the PDF producer configuration options, and editing of the PDF document can all influence the ultimate composition of the PDF file. This creates an almost infinite number of permutations that may need to be tested.

“The PDF InteropAnalyzer is a totally new concept in testing,” said Dave Jollota, president of QualityLogic’s Tools Division. “It is the first in a series of planned products that will help our customers reduce the amount of testing they need to perform by testing with known real-world files. Since the PDF InteropAnalyzer Test Suites cover a wide range of PDF characteristics and versions, developers can validate their PDF implementation to a degree never before possible.”

QualityLogic’s PDF InteropAnalyzer has two distinct test suites. The Installed Base Test Suite is a database of statistics and URLs for a statistical sampling of over 10,000 PDF files from the Internet, representing the installed base of PDF files end users will most likely use. The Current Release Test Suite consists of custom-developed test pages using many of the latest PDF producer and creator applications, representing the PDF files that are likely to enter the general business environment over the next 12 to 18 months.

The PDF InteropAnalyzer includes an SQL database containing the key characteristics for both the Installed Base and Current Release PDF test files. The Query Builder makes it easy to create a custom test set by querying the database for files with, or without, specific characteristics. With a custom test set, the user can:

• Generate an analysis report

• Run a smallest set analysis

• Download any needed files from the Internet

• Copy the test files to a designated directory

• Generate a file list for batch or automation processes

The PDF InteropAnalyzer is available now. Contact QualityLogic at (800) 436-6292 ext. 122.
