Presidential Hopefuls Converge on California
The 2004 Libertarian Party of California state convention will draw in more than just California Libertarians. It could be the make or break point for at least three candidates looking for their party's presidential nomination.
San Jose, CA (PRWEB) March 1, 2004 --Gary Nolan, Michael Badnarik, and Aaron Russo are all scheduled to appear in San Jose for the Libertarian Party of California state convention held the weekend of March 12-14, 2004, with the hope of becoming the front-runner to carry their party's banner in the 2004 Presidential campaign.
Being the biggest state Libertarian Party organization means the Libertarian Party of California (LPC) can afford to bring in great out-of-state speakers and there will be many at the convention (the current list can be found at http://www.ca.lp.org/conv/2004/index.php). And, because of California's size and importance, all of the major Libertarian presidential candidates will be in attendance.
Any given annual state party convention has delegates getting together to work over their platform and bylaws, discuss issues, and elect members to sit on their Executive Committee (or Board of Directors). But, in an election year, Californian Libertarians will have the added responsibility of selecting delegates to the national Libertarian Party convention to be held 3 months later in Atlanta. That's why the presidential candidates will be there, even though the state convention will follow the California March primary by ten days. Libertarians select their presidential nominee by convention. So, while delegates will head to Atlanta in May with a recommendation from libertarian voters, they will also carry with them their own opinions of the leading candidates from meeting them in person.
Gary Nolan is a radio personality who took time off from his talk show to run for the presidential nod.
Aaron Russo is a producer of such Hollywood products as "Trading Places."
Michael Badnarik is a well-traveled computer consultant.
The three candidates will face off in a debate on the first evening of the convention, Friday March 12. In the afternoon on the last day, Sunday March 14, they will each have another chance to speak before the delegation. After which, the members will let the candidates know how they did by holding a presidential straw poll.
The convention site, the newly renovated San Jose Doubletree hotel near the San Jose Airport (with free shuttle to/from), has free parking and is located at 2050 Gateway Place, San Jose, CA 95110.
