An Indian theatre owner predicts very well while Hollywood errs too badly in that.
The PASSION OF CHRIST, a movie that Hollywood was so sure once that the movie would become a Box-Office foe, has just grabbed a whooping 117.50 million in a mere five days since release. While many are in shock at this development, one theatre owner from Bangalore,a city in INDIA is beaming with joy - he made this prediction on Film-tech.com long ago
(PRWEB) March 2, 2004 --Hollywood believed in the workability of some concepts and in the non workability of some other. When it came to placing its money, on very few occasions has Hollywood put its money in places it thought would not work.
So, when Mel Gibson finished his The PASSION OF THE CHRIST, in Aramic and Latin with English subtitles and with unrelenting violence that was sure to get an R rating if not an NC-17, Hollywood was totally unanimous in closing its doors to Mel Gibson.
Mel Gibson's The PASSION OF THE CHRIST is now released and has already grossed 117.50 Million dollars in a mere five days.
Back in the first week of Febraury, when predictions for this film were made, they were largely based on what the best performer in this genre, JONAH : A VEGGIE TALES Movie had achieved by then. A theatrical cumulative of 26 million dollars for North America (US and CANADA). But then, Mel's PASSION had its own set of problems and so, many executive and industry insiders recalled the fate that had struck Martin Scorcese's THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. On this account, many did not bother to make any prediction for this film.
A site that is largely referenced by movie theatre owners and people related to the movie exhibition industry, film-tech.com saw an outlandish kind of comment or rather a prediction by one its members, DHANANJAY K.V. (also identified as KAMAKSHIPALYA DHANANJAY due to different naming conventions prevalent in the person's home country) on the Feb.7. This member is a theatre owner in Bangalore, a city in southern INDIA. He commented, giving his own reasons, that Mel Gibson's The PASSION OF CHRIST will open in a big way in the North America and that the movie would gross in excess of 100 Million US dollars in the first five days and would stay on to cross the 400 million dollars mark when it finally retreats from theatres in North America (US and CANADA).
Outlandish as it seemed then on the Feb.7, other members who were mostly theatre owners in the US or CANADA took no time to ridicule this prediction and the person behind it. That was then.
This person, Dhananjay K.V. says it was possible for him to predict the way he did simply because he was at a distance thousands of miles away from India where nobody had even heard of this film while he was all the time sitting before his computer gauging the response to this film on the internet. An user of the internet from the very first day internet was made available in India a decade ago, Dhananjay K.V. says he gathered all the input that went into his prediction from the internet sitting in his office in Bangalore, INDIA. The physical distance, Dhananjay K.V. claims, probably lent a perspective that may have missed prediction experts in the US.
Curiously, it remains to be seen whether the second part of his prediction, that the film The Passion of the Christ would exceed 400 million from theatres in the US and CANADA alone would come true too.
Dhananjay K.V. says that his prediction was not be halved and that if the second part of his prediction does not come true, then he states his first part too would lose all significance because they were made together.
He also said that he has been studying extensively, the motion picture exhibition industry in the US and INDIA for several years now. A feat, that he explains is responsible for any truth in his prediction.
