Free Speech or Right to Profanity?

Freedom of speech is a basic right that we enjoy in our nation and it has been passionately protected time and time again. One of the most powerful and emotionally charged issues related to this right is that of censorship. Book burnings, the banning of novels in the classroom, even the labeling of some music CDs as 'profane has sparked numerous battles in courtrooms across America.

(PRWEB) March 8, 2004 --Freedom of speech is a basic right that we enjoy in our nation and it has been passionately protected time and time again. One of the most powerful and emotionally charged issues related to this right is that of censorship. Book burnings, the banning of novels in the classroom, even the labeling of some music CDs as 'profane has sparked numerous battles in courtrooms across America. Movies are given a specific rating to inform moviegoers that what they are about to watch may contain profanity, nudity, sexual scenes or violence. As far as books are concerned, it is almost impossible to open a novel without exposing ourselves to explicit violence, intense profanity and detailed sex scenes. While our First Amendment rights are being protected, our right to being entertained without the graphic violence, sex and profanity that seem to be commonplace in todays book and movie industry has greatly deteriorated. Just when you believe that the situation may be hopeless, along comes an author who has the ability to write a grippingly real murder mystery without harsh obscenities or explicit sex scenes. Harry G. Pellegrins Low End combines music and mystery to create a complex story that anyone can enjoy.

The story we find ourselves contemplating in Low End features Gary Morrissey as the darkly complex protagonist. Morrissey is a struggling musician in New York City who hears about the death of a fellow musician through a mutual friend. Reluctantly, Morrissey finds himself drawn into the mystery surrounding his friends death and further investigation traps the amateur sleuth in dangerous circumstances. Pellegrin weaves truth with fiction throughout his novel as the story takes us to actual New York locations and allows us to meet characters that are based on real people. Adding even more authenticity to this novel is Mr. Pellegrins extensive knowledge of the music industry. In addition to his two degrees in music, Mr. Pellegrin has performed in bar bands since 1973. Low End introduces many of us to an unfamiliar and fascinating world that we have never seen before and yet, this is well-known territory for many musicians who may recognize themselves in the pages of this realistic mystery.

Low End is reminiscent of the hard-boiled detective mystery genre made popular in the 1930s by such authors as Raymond Chandler. Mr. Pellegrin states, In Mr. Chandlers writing, as well as in my own, the lowest possible aspects of the human psyche are explored and the sins of the lowest stratum of society are brought to light. Neither of us has succumbed to the temptation to graphically describe these matters. Anyone from a teen to a grandmother could read Mr. Chandlers books or Low End and not be offended." The realism of this gripping mystery novel is effective without the overabundance of four-letter words or overt sex scenes. Low End by Harry G. Pellegrin is published by American Book Publishing and is available at a discount online at the Publisher Direct Bookstore at http://www.pdbookstore.com.
