Black, Gay & Christian" Author Makes Los Angeles Debut With Book Signing And Discussion Events
LOS ANGELES --- Matais Books, Cards, and Art does it again! The Long Beach African-American Art Museum and Bookstore will be the exclusive host for Atlanta based writer, Herndon L Davis; author of the new controversial book, Black, Gay & Christian." The book signing and literary salon will be held on Saturday March 27, at 7pm. It will be the official LA kickoff for the books debut which is currently available only at Matais bookstore.
Were very excited to have the opportunity to host this event. It brings to the forefront very important issues dealing with spirituality, sexuality and the politics which surround it in the black community" says owner Matais Pouncil.
Released in February, Black Gay & Christian" is a 16 chapter gay/lesbian affirming, biblically based, spiritual empowerment tool geared towards the entire black community, and not just gays/lesbians. (http://blackgaychristian.com).
The book's author, Herndon L. Davis emphasizes that this book is one of joy and inspiration as it deals not only with the deeply rooted spiritual and cultural issues of the duality of being both black and gay/lesbian, it also targets the non-affirming black clergy and families in assisting them in their ministry and love towards their gay/lesbian loved ones and parishioners."
As the Gay Marriage debate swirls in the epicenter of various political, religious and cultural arenas, there is also an equally forceful initiative mounted by conservatives vying for votes from the Black Church and community in order to form an alliance against it. Hence, Black, Gay & Christian" falls squarely in the line of fire voicing the opinions, concerns and life experiences of black gay/lesbians who have traditionally led either a closeted or dont ask, dont tell" existence.
Davis adds that this book touches upon and speaks up for many contemporary social black gay/lesbian issues such as parenting, homophobia on the job, and even managing personal finances, directly from a black gay/lesbian perspective."
In addition to the book signing and literary salon, Mr. Davis will also be attending a discussion on sexuality on Tuesday March 30 hosted by In the Meantime," a black gay male social awareness organization (http://www.inthemeantimemen.org/).
Dr. Sylvia Rue, an award winning researcher and creator of the 26 minute documentary, "All Gods Children," will be presenting. The video addresses topic such as race, equality, AIDS, the role of the church, sexual orientation and issues of spirituality within the community. The general public is welcome to attend.
