Founded on principles of systems theory and family practice, the Bear Technique demonstrates a powerful method of working with adults and children who are nonverbal or resistant to treatment.
(PRWEB) March 19, 2004 --Tammy Stoner, a licensed clinical social worker, launched a new methodology of integrating teddy bears with systems theory, family practice, and genealogy at the Youth at Risk Conference in Savannah, Georgia. She called the methodology the Bear Technique.
School counselors, social workers, family therapists, principals and police, received a demonstration of this new technology grounded on the works of Murray Bowen, Salvador Minuchin and Virginia Satir. . Stoner stated that the technique has proven to be extremely quick in identifying core clinical issues in working with resistant and hard to reach adults and children. She described a situation working with a women in therapy who had been sexually abused. The woman had kept this information hidden for over a year in therapy. When using a personalized collection of teddy bears called the MeBear Family, the woman was able to quickly identify the sexual abuse as her core issue.
In Savannah, Stoner stated she was surprised at the interest from the police department. She stated that she expected social workers and family therapists to find the technique appealing, but she hadnt thought of the police as benefiting from the Bear Technique. She stated that police told her that they were fascinated with the technique as a method of investigating crimes against children quickly.
Ms. Stoner plans to continue speaking and educating providers about this important new methodology of treatment known as the Bear Technique. She stated that the impressive part of the Bear Technique is the speed in which information can be obtained. She has developed a complete program to educate providers about this important method.
